Analasys of thriller film titles

An attractive title is essential for triller films as they are the representation of what is to come. Without a title, a potential audience does not know what sort of content or plot the film will have.

This thriller film title is written in a sera font, which makes an audience feel like the film is well made and professional. The angle of the title is slightly twisted to the side, suggesting that there is a twist in the story, it also connotes that the film gives a different perspective of a character's story. The arrows coming out of the letters show that the film is creative and original, it also emphasises the title itself and plays on the name 'Noth By Northwest'.

The green background of the title suggest goodness or a lighter side to this film, usually green signifies life and goodness. The blue grid also suggests that the film is well made and has a good structure and plot, alternatively, it could suggest that there is a lot going on in the film. The grid makes a viewer think of what the film is including, such as banks or robberies. This happens because of the business of the grid. This keeps an audience on edge and waiting for a climax.

The title as a whole has a slanted view, which gives an impression that there will be different perspectives on the plot and that there is something going on that you cannot see. Towards the edge of the title, the grid gets closer together, suggesting that things will get more and more dangerous throughout the film, this creates suspense and keeps an audience wanting to see more.

This thriller film title is written in a sera font which gives it a sense that it has been produced to a high standard. It has an unnatural glow to it, which emphasises the word 'ALIEN' and its meaning, which is unknown and suggests danger. The 'A' is slightly in shadow, which suggests that it is hiding something or that something is watching the audience which gives a different feel to this title. Darkness signifies danger and endings, at the each end of the word 'ALIEN' the colour of the font gets darker and slightly covered in shadow, suggesting that there will be a bad or dangerous end for the protagonist or antagonist. In contrast to this, is the glowing 'I', this suggests that there is a lighter or good side to this film or to the Aliens, it also suggests that there is a way to another place, as it looks slightly like a door. This links to the dark edges of the word which suggest death or endings. as well as looking like a door the 'I' also looks like an eye, but is not clear of whose or what's eye, or what it is looking at, this creates suspense and mystery and attracts a potential audience as well as keeping them 'on edge'.

The font in this title is bold and fills the majority of the space in this title, which emphasises the power and stature of the Aliens. It is blue which is a cold colour, this could represent the frigidity of the Aliens and how they kill their victims without emotion.

The black background on which the word is set, is calm and the use of the contrasting cold and warm colours create a sense of mystery and make an audience feel uneasy. There is nothing happening in the background which makes the audience wonder what is going to happen. The calmness of the background makes an audience trusting and relaxed, unaware of the jumps and climax to come, this adds an excellent effect for the thriller genre. The background has a sense of innocence, similar to the people in the film, who have aliens growing inside them and are unaware of it, the audience is unaware of the thrills the film has in store, due to the blankness of the background.

The title as a whole is very rigid and straight, which comes across as intimidating to an audience. It also is drawn so that the centre is wider and higher than the edges, imitating that it is coming out towards the audience, this is intimidating and creates a sense of mystery and suspense.

This title has a rustic feel. The background is dark which represents danger and the unknown which is essential for thrillers, towards the top, it looks like a worn piece of metal which could represent guns, as this film is set in Texas, or could represent the industrialism of the characters. Alternatively, it could be a slab of concrete representing the concrete emotions or personality of the protagonist. The concrete/metal, is taller than the bloodstain, which could represent the protagonist/antagonist overlooking the violence and bloodshed.
At the bottom of the background, there is a patch of dark red which could represent the blood spilled in the film or the danger that the protagonist faces from the antagonist.

The font is fairly small, however it is very bold. This could represent the boldness of an insignificant or seemingly insignificant individual. And has a flecking of  the letters on the words which look like they could represent the journey the protagonist faces or the twists in the plot, or even the unexpected acts of kindness or violence.

In the top left corner there is a patch of dark shadow which could represent the dark side of the main characters, or that there is a dark secret in this film. Darkness usually represents the unknown which could also show that there is danger or that the unknown is dangerous.

  1. Some excellent interpretation, Cal. You can consider these aspects when thinking of your own title.
