Title sequence for 'a mother's son'

This title sequence begins with an establishing shot of the seaside. It is at night and the whole view has a blue tinge, signifying death or trouble. Overhead are crows which indicate death. The camera pans slowly showing someone stumbling across a beach, the character can be heard panting and sobbing as she attempts to run away. This is followed by a low angle shot which gives a birds eye view of the character walking through tall grass, both the camera angle and the tall grass emphasise on her vunerability. The camera titlts down so that the girl cannot be seen through the tall grass, this could be the view of whoever is chasing her. The camera then pans slowly down the girls body showing fear on her face and a bloody wound to her abdomen. Shortly after she falls to the ground where an extreme close-up of her eye shows the reflection of the person pursuing her. This creates a sense of fear and mystery for the audience. The girl apologises to the pursuer which creates an even bigger build up of suspense. The music is in a minor key which emphsises on the danger that the girl is in. After the girl dies on the floor, the camera pans up showing an isolated area, and that there was no chance of escape for the girl. The music changes to a higher key, or something that would play behind a sunrise. The title sequence concludes with numerous long shots of moorland, emphasising the isolation of the girl and the pursuer.

Analysing thriller film posters

This poster is centred aroung the main character Leon. His name is printed on the side of a tall building, suggesting that he is very significant in this film. The same building is reflected in his glasses, which could mean that he has history or has a future with this building, it could also mean that the film in mainly in this building. There is an orange tinge to the poster wigh represents danger or trouble.

This poster shows an isolated island with a lighthouse and a leaning stucture. The island itself is dangerous looking and the title suggests that it is used for 'shutting out' people who are not wanted by society. The man on the poster, is shrouded by shadows indicating he is dangerous or in trouble, the fire signifies dangers and it glints in his eye. He is looking away which could suggest he is on edge or being chased. The bold red font that reads 'some places never let you go' suggests that the protagonist will have to force his way out in order to escape.

This poster draws emphasis on the man, and shows numerous emergency vehicles on the ground, indicating he is a possible jumper. The headng 'You can only push an innocent man so far.' suggests that this man is taking to extremes to prove his onnocence or that he has been wrongly charged with a crime. The man is looking down at the ground indicating fear or remorse.

Summary of camera angles

Being new to media studies, I found it hard to differentiate from shot that were similar to each other. For example, a crab shot against a panning shot. Despite struggling at first, I got to grips with the various shots and angles. I felt confident using equipment such as tracking dollies and tripods and this gave much more of an opportunity to experiment with different camera shots.

We used Sony handheld cameras that were compatible with tripods and tracking dollies. These high defenition but easy to use camers gave us enough freedom to learn basic movements and angles. We were able to record shots such as 'close up' and an 'over the shoulder shot', we were also able to use shots such as an 'extreme long shot' due to the high quality of the cameras we used and establishing shots.

No Country For Old Men

Written and directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

This thriller is the winner of  four oscars, over 100 other awards and has had 50 more nominations.

Plot summary - Set in rural Texas, Lewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the remnants of a 2 million dollar drug deal that has gone fatally wrong. Instead of reporting his discovery to the police, he takes the money for himself. This move puts psychotic serial killer Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) on his trail, as he casually kills anyone that gets in his way.

As Moss desperately tries to stay one step ahead, the blood from this wild western goose chase begins to flow behind him, as Chigurh closes in. Meanwhile, the lazy Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) cheerfully supervises the investigation even as he struggles to face the sheer enormity of the crimes he is attempting to stop.

What is a Thriller?

Thriller films revolve around anticipation and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the audience alert and 'on the edge of their seats'. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape or a mystery. No matter what sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, it will emphasize the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the film and leads to a climax at the end of the film.
