Some Features of Soap Operas

Multiple Plots and Characters - Storylines are usually interwoven. Scenes move continuously between different characters and plots.
Moral nature of storylines - we are invited to make moral judgements about characters and plots i.e. should Michelle have an abortion or keep the baby? Storylines based on personal and family relationships.
Social and domestic settings - e.g. shops, pubs, homes, motels etc. - potential for unlimited storylines.
Strong Female Characters – women are shown as relatively powerful either in domestic or professional settings. (relates to traditional female audience). Male characters tend to be weaker and/or more sensitive than in traditional drama.
Simplified characters - for easy recognition, sometimes to the point of being stereotypes.
